Barcelona, January 19-20, 1996.
INTER-MED is a conference of researchers, experts, and managers of computer and telecommunication networks who want to extend the benefits of these technologies and its applications to all the Mediterranean countries with its different cultures and ways of living. We stress the importance of the INTERNET technology as a common language for all this effort. That explains the name of the conference. Although the conference is open to other telematic technology considered appropriated for this area.
The Bangeman Report presented last year a common strategy to incorporate the European Union to the emerging global information society. The Euromediterranean Conference in Barcelona is starting a new way of co-operation between both sides of our old sea. The Mediterranean cannot be left aside in the global efforts for developing the new information society and its internetworking technology.
Centuries ago, the Mediterranean generated some old ideas that seem very moderns now. The idea of cosmopolis is now at our fingerprints with the Internet phenomenon. The Alexandrine achievement of a library as a depository of universal knowledge, is now made possible by the Web technology. The ideal of koine as a peaceful and prosperous multicultural community can be a Mediterranean challenge in the information age.
The Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, in co-operation with the Catalan Chapter of Internet Society and PANGEA, the Catalan node of the APC, is organising this event. Our goal is to create a network of projects between different research institutions, companies, administrations and civil organisations in order to accelerate the developing of the global information society in this region.
The conference is about information society in the Mediterranean. Its goal is to cope with the information society as an unified technical, economical, social and cultural phenomenon. In this first conference, the working areas will be four:
