Join the CEPIS Research Task Force!

cepisCEPIS would like to call upon the knowledge and experience that all CEPIS members possess to develop a strong Research Task Force. The first step of the Research Task Force will be to establish a work programme that may include a review of common research issues and concerns across Europe. Members are invited to submit expressions of interest to participate in this Research Task Force by emailing Michel Krmek.

CEPIS at Second Digital Agenda Assembly

DAE_logoThe Digital Agenda Assembly (DAA) is an annual event held by the EC in Brussels on 21-2 2 June. This event brought together 800 stakeholders from around Europe to discuss challenges and assess progress in the implementation of the targets specified in the Digital Agenda for Europe (DAE). The Assembly consisted of a plenary session and 8 workshops on topics such as cloud computing, social media and cyber security. The Digital Agenda online discussion platform launched earlier this year is available for your comments and the results will feed into a mid-term review by the European Commission.

Furthermore the recently published Digital Agenda Scoreboard 2012 that evaluated the DAE progress reveals that almost a quarter of the European labour force has insufficient ICT skills, and that many unemployed are not equipped with digital skills to find a job. As a consequence the European Commission predicts growing difficulties to fill ICT vacancies and highlights this area of concern. Of the 101 actions of the DAE 34 are complete, 52 are on track and 15 are delayed or at risk of delay. Find Out More about the Digital Agenda for Europe

CEPIS at EC Forum on Vocational Training

ec_logo_2012CEPIS Secretariat staff attended the European Business Forum on Vocational Training organised by the European Commission on 7-8 June. This event aims to stimulate discussions between the education and training sector, business, and policy makers on skills development and labour market needs. In preparation of the Forum an EU-wide survey was conducted to assess challenges and trends in continuing the development of skills of the European workforce. The survey shows that the ICT sector is facing a lack of highly specific professional skills in areas such as ICT security and cloud computing. Moreover the sector is struggling to attract young talents as it still faces an image problem. Read the Full Report

German Informatics Committed to Increase Energy Efficiency

GI_Newlogo2012German Informatics (GI) recently joined United Nation’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative (SEFA) which aims to provide universal access to modern energy services, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency, and double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix by 2030. GI will provide its expertise to contribute to the reduction of energy consumption in all sectors, including ICT which accounts for 1.8% of electric consumption in Germany. Citizens Demand Same Data Rights Across the EU – Survey Reveals

ipts_logoA new report from the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) reveals the results of the largest survey ever conducted on people’s attitudes towards data protection, privacy and electronic identity. As the information society expands, three in four Europeans accept that revealing personal data is necessary to benefit from online services such as social networks or e-commerce. The study also highlights that online users are very much aware of the risks incurred on their privacy by their online activities and almost all Europeans (90%) favour equal protection of their data protection rights across the EU. EC Consultation on a ‘Clean and Open Internet’

consultations2The European Commission recently launched a consultation on the application of procedures for notifying and acting on illegal content hosted by online intermediaries. The consultation focuses on Notice-and-Action (N&A) procedures that start when someone notifies a hosting service provider about illegal content on the Internet, and end when a hosting service provider acts against the alleged illegal content. The consultation addresses the problems of conflicting jurisprudence and the fragmentation of N&A procedures across the EU, which can result in illegal content staying online too long while legal content might be taken down unnecessarily. This consultation is open until 5 September. Take Part in this Consultation

Launch of Next Internet Protocol IPv6

IP6Wordmark256Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) was formally launched worldwide on 6 June with the support of the European Commission. The implementation of IPv6 is a key action of the Digital Agenda for Europe in order to upgrade the existing Internet infrastructure and to safeguard the development of new online services and applications. IPv6 will provide a virtually unlimited number of IP addresses as well as higher security levels. The new protocol should also provide innovation opportunities for new Internet applications and services. However the deployment of IPv6 is costly and therefore IPv6 and IPv4, the current protocol in place, will run in parallel until transition mechanisms allowing the complete replacement of IPv4 are in place. EC Regulation to Enable Cross-Border Electronic Signatures

ec_logo_2012The European Commission recently proposed new rules to enable cross-border and secure electronic transactions between businesses, citizens, and public authorities across Europe. The absence of common EU rules on legal recognition of electronic identification schemes (e-IDs) causes inconvenience and extra costs associated with time delays, especially for citizens who undertake business or work activity outside their home country. The proposed Regulation aims to guarantee the mutual recognition of e-ID schemes in the EU so as to ensure that people and businesses can use their own national e-ID to access public services in other EU countries. EC Funds Project on Digital Preservation

shaman_projectThe Sustaining Heritage Access through Multivalent Archiving project (SHAMAN), co-funded by the European Commission, has developed a framework which enables digital preservation of data in virtually any format. This project aims to address software and hardware obsolescence which could potentially prevent future generations from accessing valuable information assets. A holistic approach was used to develop a reference architecture that provides a unified view of digital preservation enabling digital preservation to be integrated seamlessly into the overall architecture of an organisation.
