Council - Registration Open
The 51st CEPIS Council meeting will take
place at The Hotel in
Brussels, Belgium on Thursday, 21
November 2013 from 08:30 to 16:00. There
will be a welcome reception at 19:00 on
Wednesday, 20 November, the evening
prior to the Council Meeting in the
hotel. This welcome reception will
include a buffet dinner. To register, please click here.

Execom Elections - Nominations Open
Until 21 October
 The official
invitation to Members to nominate
candidates for the Executive Committee
has been announced on behalf of Honorary
Secretary, Declan Brady. The term of one
CEPIS officer expires in November 2013.
In accordance with the CEPIS
Constitution, Members are invited to
nominate candidates for election to the
position of Vice President. The term of
office for this position, which has been
filled by Luis Fernandez to date, is two
years. Nominations can be accepted until
21 October. For further information

ICT Professionalism Award - Submit Your
Nominations Before 31 October
 At the request of CEPIS
Member Societies, the call for
nominations for the CEPIS ICT
Professionalism Award is extended
until 31 October 2013 to allow for
more time to complete nominations.
This new pan-European award will
honour individuals who have
demonstrated outstanding
contributions to the development of
the ICT Profession. The CEPIS ICT
Professionalism Award is open to
anyone - be it an ICT professional,
a researcher or an academic - who
has made a substantial contribution
to the development of the profession
in general or contributions to
advancing any of the building blocks
of ICT Professionalism. Nominations
must be submitted by CEPIS Member

Digital
Woman Award Under the Patronage of EC
Vice President Neelie Kroes
Neelie Kroes, Vice President of
the European Commission in charge
of the Digital Agenda for Europe,
has officially expressed her
support of the Digital Woman
Award, a new pan-European prize
for women and young girls in
technology. She will announce the
winners of this new at the ICT2013
event, in Vilnius, on 6-8
November. CEPIS is a partner of
the Digital Woman Award which was
officially pledged in support of
the Grand Coalition
for Digital Jobs. More on the

Submits the 40th Pledge to the Grand
Coalition for Digital Jobs
 CEPIS Greek
Member, the Hellenic Professionals
Informatics Society (HePIS),
recently submitted its GetBusy
initiative as the 40th pledge to the
Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs.
GetBusy is a webportal which
highlights the career opportunities
offered by ICT and provides youth
with the skills they need to find a
job. Since it was launched GetBusy
has trained 7500 young people in
Greece. The GetBusy website provides
free educational materials as well
as information related to
entrepreneurship, the development of
new digital skills, and green
entrepreneurship. More on GetBusy
FIPA
Investigates Salaries of IT Professionals
in Finland
 The
Finnish Information Processing
Association (FIPA) published
the IT Career Survey 2013
which analyses the salary trends of IT
professionals in Finland. In 2013, IT
professionals earned on average a base
salary of 4311 euro. This average salary
increased by about 3% in spite of the
crisis and continues to be higher than
in other sectors. When it comes to
gender differences, female IT
professionals earn €0.93 for every euro
that their male counterparts earn.
Compared to other sectors, the ICT
sector has the smallest gender gap. Download the IT Career

Green ICT Code of Good Practice for
Organisations? 93% Say Yes
 A large
majority of website visitors (93%)
agree that organisations should
adhere to a Green ICT code of good
practice, according to the latest
results of the poll on the CEPIS
homepage. The CEPIS Green ICT Task
Force is working on developing a
future CEPIS Green ICT code of good
practice. One of the recommendations
of the report Energy Efficient
Enterprise in Europe,
published by CEPIS in 2011, was
indeed to create a code of good
practice which would describe steps
organisations should undertake to
become more sustainable. If you

European
e-Skills 2013 Conference, 10 December in
Brussels
The European e- Skills 2013
Conference, organised by the
European Commission, will take stock
of the progress made in the areas of
e-skills, ICT professionalism and
e-leadership. Proposals for maturing
the ICT profession will be
discussed, and the European
e-Competence Framework (3.0) will be
unveiled. The latest trends and
statistical figures on the supply
and demand of e-skills will be
presented. National e-skills
policies and multi-stakeholder
partnerships will also be reviewed,
as well as progress of the Grand
Coalition for Digital Jobs. More on the

Education
and Skills are Top Priorities for Europe’s
Tech Entrepreneurs
Teachers should be made digitally
confident and competent, universities
should be encouraged to add digital
components to their curriculum, and EU
countries should offer a digital
certificate course to provide basic
digital skills to graduates. These are
some of the 22 key measures from the Startup Europe
Manifesto put forward by a group
of leading European tech
entrepreneurs. The objective of this
action plan is to overcome roadblocks
that are threatening Internet-driven
economic growth and to foster
entrepreneurship and innovation in
Europe. So far, 3000 people have

Announces Plans for a Single Telecoms
Market
The European Commission recently
announced the Connected Continent
legislative package in order turn
Europe into a global digital leader.
The proposed measures include an
EU-wide protection of net neutrality,
the abolishment of roaming charges in
the EU, and simpler rules to encourage
cross-border investments. Europe is
currently risks missing out on the
opportunities that ICT can deliver for
growth and employment because of the
absence of a genuine single market for

Mobile
Threats and Social Media Identity Thefts
Are Among Top Cyber Threats
Mobile threats and social media
identity thefts are among the top
cyber threats, according to a new
report from the European Network and
Information Security Agency (ENISA). As
mobile technology becomes increasingly
pervasive, cyber threats encountered
in the traditional arena of IT will
prevail on mobile devices and the
services available on these platforms.
The development of digital currencies,
such as Bitcoin, and anonymous payment
services is likely to open up new
opportunities for cyber-fraud and

Broadband
Access: Where Does Your Country Rank?
The latest country-by-country
data on state of broadband access were
recently published by the United
Nation’s Broadband Commission for
Digital Development. Out of the top 10
countries for Internet use, 8 are
located in Europe with Iceland in the
lead with 96 percent. The report also
shows good progress in terms of making
broadband policy universal with 134
countries having a national broadband
plan in place by mid-2013. More on the State of
